Lab 7: Health Insurance in NumbersHealth Insurance as we all should know it is an insurance that is very important for everyone or at least every household to have. A couple of classmates and I read on the website that in regards to health insurance in Michigan, 5.8% of Michigan residents don’t have health insurance, while 14.3% of Michigan residents live with a disability. I looked back at the responses I got to the questions who do you get your health insurance through, does your health insurance cover disabilities, and do you know anyone or did you ever gotten refused health insurance due to a disability on Facebook. I saw that for the first question who do you get your health insurance through 4 people checked Self-Funded while 9 people checked Employer. Then for the second question does your health insurance cover disabilities 7 checked maybe, 3 checked no, and 3 checked yes. For the third question do you know anyone or did you ever gotten refused health insurance due to a disability 6 checked no, 3 checked maybe, and 4 checked yes. From the results I got from Facebook alone we can see that most people get their health insurance through employer, many don't know if their health insurance covers disabilities, and many people didn't get rejected health insurance due to a disability. A thing I noticed is that many people didn't get rejected health insurance due to disability but there is still some people that have gotten rejected so this needs to be improved so that many people with disabilities can get health insurance. I also noticed that the insurance companies should tell their customers if their health insurance covers disabilities or not because according to my Facebook crowdsourcing results 7 out of 13 people checked maybe which means they aren't sure if their health insurance covers disabilities. The results on Instagram that the people I worked with got was of similar status to the Facebook results. I then went back to the article on the Census Bureau website to look at the health insurance data on the United States. I found out that in 2019 in the United States about 68.0 and 34.1% of the population at some point during the year had Private (Self-insured) health insurance. While the percentage of people with employer-provided coverage was about 55.4 % of the population during time of the interview. These information helped me as a citizen that don't really look at these statistics know that many more people are now getting employed and can get their health insurance that way. What I learned from this research was that many people in Michigan and the united states get their health insurance through their employers and that customers of health insurance companies should be informed on if their health insurance covers disabilities. #HealthInsurance

Lab 6: Video StoryI Use It- Electric Baking Pan Recommendation VideoOn this episode of "I Use It" I would be interviewing my mother on a thing she uses often and would recommend to a friend. She chose to recommend the Electric Baking Pan a product that she always uses to make all kinds of pancakes for our family to eat. It is really multifunctional and portable. I would recommend it to every one that loves to bake but hate having to use the oven. #ElectricBakingPan#IUseIt

How to stay Mentally and Physically Healthy during Covid-19 from a College Student's Perspective.Lab 3: Networking: My Health StoryCovid-19 caused many places and events to close or canceled. Which caused many people to be stuck at home with not a lot of interesting activities to do. I usually relied on walking in the park to maintain my physical health and found that I couldn't do it anymore. I to worried about both of these things. Things I did to maintain my mental health was by taking an online class during the summer semester, using a planner to plan my days, and finishing/catching up on entertainment . I chose to plan my days in quarantine because that way I know what I did so I don't feel like I did nothing all day. I also used the time to learn more things because I chose to use this time to build myself up. I also finished and caught up on tv shows/movies that class time won't allow me to have time for them. These things really helped me to be mentally sane because they made me happy. Things I did to maintain my physical health was to walk around the house, play Just Dance on the Wii, and ate healthier meals. I walked around the house to keep my metabolism healthy so it can help me fight any disease that may come my way. A fun way I chose to use to keep me physically healthy was that I played the Wii game Just Dance. I ate healthy meals so when I forget to exercise I don't feel guilty and to keep my physical body healthy. In conclusion, This is how I maintained my mental and physical health in quarantine during Covid-19. #Mental and Physical Health during Covid-19Lab 2: Questions that MatterCrowdsourcing is the idea of gathering and evaluating data from a variety of people. I was put into a group with Alayna and Sergio to crowdsource on a topic pertaining to the county we decided to crowdsource. We separately perused through the Census Bureau website to look at data on the county we lived in. We all read on the website that in regards to health insurance in Michigan, 5.8% of Michigan residents don’t have health insurance, while 14.3% of Michigan residents live with a disability. We chose Oakland and Macomb county to crowdsource because one or two of us lived in one of the two counties. Alayna and I were chatting in our group chat on what topic to do and Sergio joined in with a thought out idea of how we could do the crowdsourcing. So we all agreed to do that idea which is on the topic of health insurance. I surveyed people on Facebook so I made a google forms survey of all three of our questions so we can get data for all the questions from responders on Facebook. They surveyed people on Instagram on the questions they chose to ask. After 24 hours we shared the results we got with each other and started thinking of how to write the blog posts. The audience turn out I got for the survey on Facebook was really good cause I got 13 people to take the survey. For the first question who do you get your health insurance through 4 people checked Self-Funded while 9 people checked Employer. For the second question does your health insurance cover disabilities 7 checked maybe, 3 checked no, & 3 checked yes. For the third question do you know anyone or did you ever gotten refused health insurance due to a disability 6 checked no, 3 checked maybe, & 4 checked yes. The results on Instagram that Alayna found for the question she asked which was who do you get your health insurance through. The answer options she gave was state, federal, employer, self-funded, or uninsured. She got 13 people to answer the question. The results she got for this question was that 69.2% of people got their health insurance through their employer, while 15.4% were insured through the state, and 7.7% were federally insured or self-funded. The results on Instagram that Sergio found for the question he asked which was does your health insurance cover disabilities. The answer options he gave were yes, no, & don't know. He got 23 people to answer the question. The results he got were that 25% said their health insurance covers their disabilities, 22% said their health insurance doesn't cover their disability, and 52% didn't know if their disability was covered or not by their health insurance. The overall crowdsourcing results were beyond our expectation because our expectation of there being a lot of respondents wasn't very high. What I learned from these results was that people aren't really informed on if their health insurance covers disabilities and that a lot of people get health insurance through their employers. These Charts show the results we got from responders on Facebook: In conclusion this was a really fun crowdsourcing experience. It was fun because we got to ask people questions and get rewarded by them responding to our questions to give us data to write this blog post. This exercise also was a very good teamwork experience because we got lots of data due to the fact that we could split up the survey workload. It was also a learning experience that showed us how our community is like on the topic of health insurance. This assignment was a good practice to get used to using crowdsourcing as a method to get data when one doesn't have much of a network yet. #Health Insurance

Lab 1: Responding to health stories.I was looking through the health stories on The Center for Health Journalism and Journalist’s Resource collection on health care. I found most of the stories on The Center for Health Journalism interesting and more recent to read. Most of the stories on both sites were about the Coronavirus Pandemic. The stories I read was on that topic.
What I found that was surprising was that people would let children that are in elementary - high school in person and not have the classes be hybrid or online. But what wasn't surprising about that was that the article was about schools reopening in Florida. I found that aspect of the situation not surprising because of how people in that state were still going to the beaches and doing many other group activities despite the fact that there is a deadly virus going around. Something I knew before reading the article is that children are at a low risk of getting infected by the virus. Another article I read was about how the coronavirus pandemic has devastated the Asian community in San Francisco, California. A moment that stood out in this article is that they talk about how the Chinatown's elderly residents have a hard time getting their everyday needs due to the risk they are in because of the pandemic. But the article focuses on how there are a lack of resources to help the elderly Chinatown people to get there necessary needs while not putting them at risk. I felt I needed to read the article and write about the article and also share it on my social media pages so people can have knowledge about it and hopefully someone with more ability than I do can actually help them. In conclusion, I have learned a lot from both articles. |
